Notes #4 & #5

Fragments 1953
In the poem “Fragments 1953” by Gottfried Benn, the author writes with a sensible precise diction that draws the reader to listen on how “a day without tears is a rare occurrence.” He explains that those days with tears, is “practically” an incident of a series of events in a person’s life that are going to occur no matter if you were the blame for them or not, it is going to happen. rare occurrencerare occurrenceA day without tears is a rare occurrenceIn addition the author explains a semi-nostalgic but admiration of the times during 1953, when “men still wore starched collars” and went through a great deal of pain, that express much disappointment in life. In addition also feels like the writer wants to show some confusing between how it is now and how it was then. He writes that those were the years “when something whispered” which suggest a sense of a fearful tediousness amongst people during 1953.

The Living End
In the poem “The Living End” by Samuel Menashe, the author writes a miniature but clear-cut poem that goes straight into the anthology of disappointment and failure. Because of the poem be short it expressing the feeling that life is too short, and that people aren’t always able to do everything that they dreamed of, because when the author writes “before long the end.” And because life is so short towards the end there will be “mis-grivings about what you did,” stating that what you want to do may not be what you do or if you can interprete that what you have done, later in lfe there may be some regrets. This will have a person feeling like a failure with a great deal of disappointment because of what you were not able to do and/or what you’ve done that you are not too proud of.

Note # 2 Gladiator

In the scene titled "Failure as a Father" of the movie "Gladiator" Marcus Aurelius, a Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD informs his own son, Commodus, that he will not succeed him on the throne. Commodus reaction to the words of his father suggested a sense of divination or forthcoming due to a letter from his fathers. And in the words of his father Marcus Aurelius (in the letter), Commodus felt an unwillingly impression which suggested a lack of four chief virtues; "wisdom justice, fortitude temperance," and realize that he had no of them but instead he had "Ambition. That can be a virtue when it drives us to excel. Resourcefulness, courage, perhaps not on the battlefield, but... there are many forms of courage. Devotion, to my family and to you." This exemplifies the character of Commodus as a character of pride and self satisfaction amongst himself and feels that his four chief virtues are just as important as his fathers. The calm depressed but angry that Commodus feels since he feels impotent to propitiate  his father with anything and everything that he does frustrates him when all he wants is "for ways to please you, to make you proud. One kind word, one full hug." However, his father explains to Commodus in a heartfelt sincere way that "your faults as a son is my failure as a father." With Commodus feeling the 'disappointment and failure' to become the next heir of the throne, while his father feels the 'disappointment and failure' as a father creates this scene of complete chaos which in the end has one of them becoming deranged....Commodus

Note # 3 Friday Night Lights

In the scene titled "Falling Short" of the movie "Friday Night Lights" the Permian High Panthers of Odessa, Texas, find themselves in the state championship football game representing a community that is going through economic turmoil plus the numerous of ongoing personal conflict. However, a great seek of comfort and joy comes from the community each and every Friday night when the Permian Panthers takes the field and try to bring happiness to the community by acting as the only successful thing that is going on. And when they reached to the state championship game nothing would be better for the sake of the community to bring home a championship. In the opening of this scene the Panthers star quarter back Mike Winchell takes the snap with the clock running down to 0:00 and this background music begins. The upbeat dynamic sound and the tenacity of their star quarterback to evade and/or take on defenders with ease suggested the absence of a tragic failure for the Panthers. But when it came to the end the Panthers fall inches short of winning the state championship in the final seconds and are left to console each other after the defeat. While observing each and every fan face there was a feeling of an uneasy bleakness/confusion amongst players, coaches and the fans. Players began to cry but due to the close connection amongst the players and community many fans took it as a lost for their own own community. They were right there from bringing joy to the community but was inches short, which showed there fight and determination to get as far as they did, but all in all they view this a disappointment to their coach and community.
